Réunion Island boasts three impressive calderas, formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption of the Piton des Neiges. The smallest one which is a little more than an hour drive from Saint Pierre promises a stunning view of the village and forest below.
Have a break in Cilaos! This attractive village has schools, restaurants, shops, a swimming pool and a stadium with modern infrastructures. The mountain path is only a few minutes from the village. The Runweb team have tried and tested all the elements necessary to get your hear racing; the gîtes, the food and the walks.
The road that leads to Cilaos is mind-blowing. Along your way, you’ll spot several lay-bys converted into viewpoints, from which one can contemplate a panoramic view over the mountains and the coast, left far behind the road that winds through the vegetation.
At an altitude of one thousand two hundred meters, this caldera attracts both tourists and locals all year round. In the summer, one goes there to enjoy its cool atmosphere, whereas in the winter, the holiday makers take advantage of the dry season to explore the various trails. Fresh air and exotic new surroundings are guaranteed.
There are high ramparts, mountain streams, hamlets (remote villages), cliff roads and forests. Nature lovers won’t be disappointed. Cilaos is surrounded by the major peaks of the island: “les trois Salazes”, “le col du Taïbit”, “le Grand Bénare”, “le Gros Morne”, “le Dimitile” and right in the centre lies the highest peak of the island, “le Piton des Neiges,” culminating at more than three thousand meters above sea-level.
