Reunion Island

Being recommended by the interregional director of Météo-France, the prefect has established a CYCLONE warning system in Réunion Island, which aims at informing the public of the exponential dangers. The system consists of two alerts, orange alert and red alert preceded by a cyclone watch. The population is widely informed both via the Medias and the answering machines of Météo-France. In addition to the daily forecast, a hotline is established in order to inform the public about the intensity and motion of the cyclone whenever a tropical disturbance develops in the zone controlled by the Tropical Cyclone Centre of Réunion Island. A tropical cyclone advice is usually issued every six hours, increasing to every three hours when cyclone warnings are required.

Cyclone watch

A cyclone watch is a WARNING against cyclonic danger.  It is issued when a cyclonic disturbance develops in the area, and poses a potential threat for Réunion Island.
Even after a cyclone, a CYCLONE WATCH is generally sustained for a certain period, because it may either make a comeback or because of the risks and dangers following a gale or cyclone.

Orange Alert
The orange alert denotes an important THREAT in the next twenty-four hours.  Even after the cyclone has passed, the ORANGE ALERT is maintained as it may make a comeback within the twenty-four hours.  Schools, day nurseries and kindergartens are closed.

Red Alert
The red alert is announced when danger is imminent.  It indicates that the cyclone will slam into the island or its periphery within the next few hours.  A 3 hours notice is announced before upgrading to the RED ALERT, in order to allow the whole population to reach their home or to be sheltered from any danger.  Driving is prohibited.   As a preventive measure, the red alert is generally followed by an orange alert.
