An updated list of the trails closed to the public
Lying not far from the Piton de la Fournaise, the Piton de l’Eau is often neglected by hiking amateurs. However, the only volcanic lake of the island is worth visiting.
| This hike is one of the easiest ones. There is no steep climb or acrobatic descents. The path is flat, wide and accessible by car (fortunately reserved for farmers and the Forestry Commission). On the other hand, you may go by mountain bike or on horseback. | |

| The trail goes across a number of fields. The Plaine des Cafres is the first area of Réunion Island devoted to cattle-breeding and dairy production. The tinkle of the cow-bells lets us know that there are herds around. |
| You can observe the cows and their calves by leaving the main track and taking a small path (often muddy) across the the forest of tamarinds and ferns. | |
|
| An hour later, we find ourselves at the foot of the Piton de l’Eau which we climb easily in a couple of minutes. |
| From September onwards, a superb crown of dazzling white arums adorns the lake of a dazzling white crown. A distinctive feature of this exceptional place. |
|
| This ancient caldera is not particularly impressive. Once you have been around the lake, settle down to enjoy the scenery. There is an open view of the Sainte-Rose area and a part of the eastern coast. Opposite us, the Piton des Neiges rises above the clouds. The only drawback could be the weather. As always, it is advisable to leave early in the morning in order to enjoy fully the scenery. |
