With comfortable bedrooms, the youth hostels offer great value for money; maximum 16 € per person for a night, (except in Saint Denis where it can be more expensive)! Besides, the 16 € package includes breakfast and dinner, (advance booking is necessary). There are shared showers and toilets. It is an opportunity to interact with other travelers (often from all over the world).
Although it is a youth hostel, guests of all ages can be accepted. You only need to subscribe to the Youth Hostels Federation (see the rates and information below).
Réunion Island has five youth hostels which belong to the same organization, "AJOI" (Auberges de jeunesse Océan indien).

History of Youth Hostels The first Youth Hostel was founded in Althena, Germany by Richard Schirmann in 1907. By 1919, there were 300 Youth Hostels in Germany. Marc Sangnier opened the first French Youth Hostel in his Bierville's estate and created the French Youth Hostel League (Ligue Française des Auberges de jeunesse). By the end of 2005, the International Youth Hostelling Federation boasted 4000 youth hostels and 4 million members in 81 countries. As for the French Federation, it had 160 youth hostels and 130 000 members. |
