Like its people, music is mixed in Reunion island. Focus on dance, it is also a factor of social cohesion. Besides the variety, reggae, raga and rap and zouk, reunionese music presents two styles of its own: Maloya and Sega.
As the American blues, the maloya is a song of lament, sung originally by the slaves with the evil of the country and complaining of mistreatment by their masters.
Once banned by the authorities, today maloya is a festive music passed down from generation to generation. Even today, the reunioneses still dancingmaloya during Kabars.
Very percussive, the maloya is characterized primarily by a ternary rhythm percussion, using a pulse-double crooked black-black-pause repeatedly. Traditional instruments like the Kayamba, roll, or boron are the basis of traditional maloya.
