Réunion Island is the result of two successive volcanic eruptions. The first one occured at Piton des Neiges and the second one at Piton de la Fournaise.
The Piton des Neiges volcano is at the origin of the formation of the northwestern part of the island, notably the Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos calderas following four consecutive eruptions. Piton de la Fournaise rose from the southeastern side of the Piton des Neiges. It is a shield volcano : it produces fluid basaltic lava flows. With an average of one eruption every ten months, it is one of the most active volcanos of the planet.
Lunar landscapes and a change of scenery are garanteed: not to be missed on any account !
