The Calderas : Mafate
The cirque de Mafate, the most inaccessible caldera
Also, it is the most remote caldera which is accessible only by helicopter or on foot, via the hiking trails. The paved roads make this cirque a favourite destination for hikers as they can explore this unspoiled wilderness.
Hamlets, also known as "ilets"
The 8 hamlets in Mafate are home to around 700 people, who live off the land in splendid isolation:
- La Nouvelle: located 1400m of altitude, La Nouvelle is the most inhabited village, about 150 people live there.
- Grand Place: consists of small hamlets; Grand Place or Cayenne, Grand Place Boutique and Grand Place les Hauts.
- Ilet à Bourses: is a beautiful plateau, at the foot of Morne de Fourche.
- Aurère: is a large plateau at the foot of Piton Cabris. As a small ravine, Bémale separates Piton Cabris from Ilet Malheur, you need to cross a footbridge to go to either way.
- Marla: located between the foot of Grand Bénares and the Trois Salazes, Marla is the highest hamlet in Mafate, with 1600m height.
- Roche Plate: 1100m high, this "ilet" is at the foot of Maido.
- Ilet à Malheur
- Ilet aux Orangers
