Réunion Island is a paradise for water sports. The Trois Bassins surf spot is one of the most popular of the island. Let's head for a tour.
Blue-turquoise water, a sun at its zenith and a nice weather all year-round, there's nothing like a quick swim. The island has a few popular surf spots. Some of the great champions of the discipline, such as Kelly Slater has surfed over there. Yet, much better, we have a local champion who won at the highest level and practiced off the Réunionese coast, Jérémy Florès.
One must go along the western coast to reach the surf spot of Trois Bassins. Shortly after la Saline les Bains, before the four lanes towards Saint-Leu, a small road leads to the spot. It is always crowded. Overlooking the bay, a snack bar with a covered verandah has even set up there.
François, a Réunionese lifeguard has been surfing for two and a half years along the spot of Trois Bassins. It's a spot which he particularly likes because "very often the swell comes here and nowhere else." Indeed, its physical location enables to have waves all year round, especially, huge waves and the famous sheers. There are three different sheers that give out three types of waves. The most popular sheer is the "right - left" in the midst of the bay, the one that gives most thrills and sensations.
"One is sure to have fun, even the most experienced ones. The spot is highly popular, the water level is deeper, hence restricting the risk of touching the sea beds and to hurt oneself. The wave is not very fast, which pleases particularly the beginners," summed up François.
Indeed, there are many surfing schools which go to this spot, particularly during holidays. Watched over by an instructor, they surf across the mini waves, which seem not to disturb the most experienced surfers. The spot of Trois-Bassins is one of the most popular ones, there is certainly no traffic jam, but it is very crowded at some days. One is recommended to be cautious as one may collide.
What's cool at the spot of Trois-Bassins is the friendliness. Jérémy and Maxime are two kids from l'Hermitage. They prefer to come here, rather than surfing at the spots of Roches Noirs or l'Hermitage. "Here, we have our habits. We learnt to surf at Trois-Bassins. We are used to the waves and the atmosphere is friendly. There is not too much show off." We can hence, come here to surf, whether to learn or to improve oneself, without having to bother about the glances within a friendly atmosphere.
