With a PhD in geophysics from the Université de Montpeller II, Fabrice holds a postdoctoral postion in seismology at the Australian National University, since 2006. Specialised in seismology and vulcanology, his objective is find a job as a Master of Conferences in the geophysics department at the Université de La Réunion. He is currently living in Canberra with his girlfriend, also from Réunion Island. Fabrice is the holder of an Overseas Talents Award, given to him in November 2007 at the Palais de l’Iéna in Paris.
How did you come to leaving your island?
Originally from Saint-Joseph, I left Réunion Island with a DEUG (General University Diploma) in order to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Earth Science. At the time, it was not possible to do this course on the island. I obtained my degree after a year spent at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon.
And then?
I then obtained a master’s degree, a DEA (Diploma of Further Studies) and a PhD in geophysics at the Université de Montpellier II. Whilst writing my thesis, based on a study of the Galapagos, I spent five months at the University of Oregon. I was lucky enough to then become a teacher in geophysics (ATER) at the Université de Polynésie Française, upon completion of my thesis. Since April 2006, I have held a postdoctoral position in seismology with Professor Brian Kennett.
What have you gained from being able to move around so much?
Being able to move around has allowed me to travel and to learn about different cultures and world regions. Through doing this, I have been able to work with specialists in the domains of seismology and vulcanology. Today, I would like to find a job as a Master of Conferences in the geophysics department on Réunion Island.
What are your thoughts on the socio-economic situation of the island?
Just like many others, I find the unemployment rate worrying. Drastic measures are necessary. The unemployment rate in Canberra, where I am currently living, is around 3%.
What are your thoughts on this town and its inhabitants?
Canberra is a very beautiful area with numerous birds, kangaroos and parks. There is very little pollution. Its inhabitants come from all over the world and, in general, they are always willing to help you.
What advice would you give to young people from Réunion Island?
Being able to travel can open up doors to professions for which there is no training on Réunion Island. One must be determined, patient and try to fulfil one’s dreams!
