The second edition of Comics Festival started on 4th April 2007 in Saint Joseph. The festival lasts for a month. It is an opportunity for the reader to rediscover a fully-fledged literal and pictorial art.
Fred Figuin, one of the librarians, who initiated the festival, exclaimed: “no, comics is not a minor art, the objective is to make people understand that comics is not a secondary zone. Proof: almost all of us started to read comic books before reading novels”. The exhibition held at the town council, shows the diversity of the ninth art through the exhibited comic books. In addition to the graphics that vary from one illustrator to another, the readers have the choice between very different storylines.
Having been adventure-oriented for a long time, the comics are now opening up to new styles, which are more intimist (focusing on the private world of people’s feelings and relationships) and personal. Examples of such comic albums are “3615 Alice” by Fred Boilet or “Le combat ordinaire” by Manu Larcinet. The comics are based on the ethnography of daily life whereby the authors depict the current practices. To host this Festival 2007, Olivier Trotignon (author) and Jacky Dale (illustrator) from Réunion Island, spoke about their passion and acted out several sketches in public, one after the other.
Throughout the month, several outdoor activities are proposed to the pre-primary and primary schools of Saint-Joseph and everyone is invited to take part in various competitions, such as ‘fill in the empty speech balloons and draw up a scene from Réunion Island’s everyday life’. Be quick as the closing date is 28thApril, the last day of the festival!!
