Honouring local products

Around forty local products have been awarded the term “Produits Pays Réunion” as a guarantee concerning the origin of the produce:  this nomination is only given to producers who do not use any imported raw materials.

Produits pays RéunionLast November, a decree was published in the ‘Journal Officiel’ about the notion of “Produits Pays”, the term that producers can stamp onto their produce.  The aim of this decree is to reassure the consumer about the origin of what they find on their plate.

Faced with globalisation and problems concerning the control measures used to determine the origin of a product, this distinction is a guarantee of its quality and its traceability”, explains Maya Cesari, a regional advisor in charge of the ‘Commission Régionale des Produits Alimentaires de Qualité’ (CORPAQ).  CORPAQ, under the authority of the ‘Prefecture’ (Police Headquarters), is responsible for analysing the applications sent in by producers who wish for their produce to be recognised as a “Produit Pays Réunion”.  “The requirements are drastic.  However, if the producers were not as engaged as they are, the seal of approval would not already have been given to so many products.”

More than sixty products have been given the right to bear the multicoloured heart shaped logo.  These products either come from animals born and reared on the island or from vegetables planted and cultivated on Réunion Island.  “Most of them are products for which efforts have already been made concerning their traceability”, explains the president of the ‘Fédération Régionale des Coopératives Agricoles (FRCA), Jean-Pierre Avril.  “The producer is obliged to inform the client about the origin of the product”.

Better Creole eating

The FRCA has strongly defended this “local labelling” and has presented around fifteen different structures that work as cooperatives, to the commission.  Eggs, beef, umbra, fruit, vegetables, fresh fruit juices and honey have all been stamped with the new logo.

The consumer is somehow reassured”, says Jean-Pierre Avril who would like the consumer to be faithful to products that come from their own country rather than to imported products.  “It is necessary to explain to the locals that by buying a product whose quality is of the utmost importance, they are contributing to the island’s economy.”

More products, such as cheese and sugar, should soon be able to boast of having the label “Produit Pays Réunion”.  “Not only must we defend the quality of our local produce, but we must also think about healthy living”, explained Nassimah Dindar, the president of the ‘Conseil Général’, at the official presentation of the label, held in December.  "We must also think about highlighting a better consumption of Creole food."

Local products cooked by Brigitte Grondin

The famous Creole cook, Brigitte Grondin and her well-known recipe book “Du bonheur dans votre assiette” (Happiness in your plate) published by Epsilon Editions and Editions du 4 Epices, became the subject of a partnership with the ‘Fédération Régionale des Coopératives Agricoles de la Réunion’ and its members that present their local products.

For the 4th edition of her work, Brigitte Grondin has produced a special book of new recipes made with local products.

The decree “Produits Pays” (local products)

The terms of the decree n° 2006-1621, relative to the conditions concerning the use of the term “Produit Pays” are precise: “the label “Produit Pays” is reserved for foodstuffs as well as for non-consumable agricultural products (…) for which all levels of production, from birth to rearing, fattening and slaughtering as well as the fabrication, maturing and packaging are carried out in an overseas department…”

‘Produits Pays Réunion’ can answer to a number of precise norms: being issued from animals born, reared and slaughtered on Réunion Island or from vegetables planted and cultivated on Réunion Island.

The concerned products

More than forty different references carry the label “Produit Pays Réunion”.  These products come from around fifteen different cooperatives, including:

-The egg industry: the cooperative OVOCOOP produces around 110 million eggs, or 145 individual units per person, per year.  Réunion Island is the only DOM (Overseas Department) that produces all of its eggs, notably under the brand of Matinés Réunion.

-The poultry industry: the structure AVICOM (with 114 poultry farmers split into two groups) is at the heart of brand names such as Ti Gayar, Créollailles, Crête d’Or and Grand Matin.

-The pork industry: 250 pig breeders are members of the CPPR cooperative and cover the brands, Porcidou, Porki and Qualité Rose.

-The cattle industry: the cooperative Sica Révia is in charge of bovine meat and has 171 cattle breeders under its name who all live in the hills, 99 fattening breeders and 16 veal butchers.

-The fruit and vegetable industry: Vivéa produces more than 2000 tons of fruit and vegetables.

-Farmed umbra: the Société Aquacole des Mascareignes produces fish that is born on Réunion Island and that then lives off the coast, next to the Saint Paul bay.

-Fruit juices: SETAA produces around a million litres of fruit juices per year, notably under the brand name of Caresse Créole for fresh fruit juices.

-The honey industry: the COOPE Miel has 35 members who produced 48 tons of honey in 2005.
