At an altitude varying from 400 m to 2000 m above sea level, Le Tampon is a residential and agricultural “commune”. The weather is cooler here than on the coast. ‘Le Tampon’ derives from the Malagasy term “Tampony” meaning “summit with an open view”. Follow the RN 3 from Saint-Pierre towards the Plaine des Cafres and you’ll understand why. No doubt you will fall under the spell of the beautiful changing sceneries. The town is fairly spread out, from the place known as “la ligne des 400” all the way up to “le 28ème kilomètre”. The “commune” has many localities which have been named according to the distance between the ocean and them locality. (“le 10ème kilomètre”, “le 11ème kilomètre” etc.)
