The city of Sainte-Marie has many assets. First of all its location : it lies a mere 8 km from Saint-Denis, the island’s capital and not far from Roland Garros airport. Moreover, it has a small marina and a lovely waterfront.
Streets bordered with coconut trees, a few old colonial houses and buildings can be seen here. Sainte-Marie is a pleasant and convenient town, without any particular charm.
Its main tourist attractions are in the “hauts” area: lovely green small ravines and “bassins” where you can have a swim. Sainte-Marie is a place steeped in history. Old houses and buildings are a testimony of a past which was quite active.
The city is surrounded with sugar cane fields. Until recently, it used to be a major centre for the sugar industry. Today, following the creation of several urbanised aeas, a new type of population has settled here. Every night, many people flee from the traffic jams and the hustle and bustle of Saint-Denis and take refuge in the coolness and quietness of small villages up above Sainte-Marie.
