BIENVENUE DANS LA COMMUNE DE : SAINT-PAUL

Saint-Paul is where the first French people landed and the birthplace of the colonisation of Réunion Island. This town was also the first capital of the island. Saint-Paul is a pleasant town to live in. It has kept the charm of its colonial past. Saint-Paul is a “sous-préfecture” and one of the largest “commune” of France. The towncentre is popular for its market held every Friday morning. Tourists come in droves to enjoy the beaches of Saint-Gilles, which is part of Saint-Paul.

The Naval cemetery
This cemetery, dating back to the 18th century, is a major tourist attraction that lies opposite the cave of the fisrt Frenchmen on the island. Many locally famous people have been buried here, such as Leconte de Lisle (a poet and successor to Victor Hugo at the Académie Française in 1886) and Olivier Levasseur, also known as “la buse” (the last pirate of the Indian Ocean’s to be captured and hanged in 1730)

Saint-Paul bay
On the outskirts of Saint-Denis, on the road to Saint-Paul, lies a large bay which unites the ocean and the cliffs. Whales can often be spotted in the distance. Swimming is not advisable because of the currents, the ocean floor which becomes deep very rapidly  and the sharks.
The Cap de la Houssaye is a perfect spot for mountain climbing in complete safety, with the ocean below to cushion the fall. Cliff jumping amateurs do not hesitate to jump 13 metres under the eye of the numerous fishermen sitting on the rocks.

Saint-Paul’s outdoor market
Every Friday and Saturday morning, the town of Saint-Paul and the four-lane road is swarming with people. Saint-Paul’s outdoor market is very popular. Regarded as the most beautiful market on the island, it runs alongside the seafront. Locals and tourists come in droves to do their shopping under the coconut trees.

Maïdo and Petite-France, 'Village Créole'
15 Réunion Island villages belonging to 12 “communes”  hold the « Village Créole » label. This label is a sign of authenticity, the sense of welcome and the respect for traditions and heritage.                                                              This label is not “static”: following a charter, all villages commit themselves to making regular progress regarding the different criteria.
