Father Martin’s tomb

As soon as he arrived on the island, Father Martin became the enemy of the bourgeoisie. From the day he took up his post in April 1879, his objective was to convert and teach the Indian immigrants. He soon realised that apart from their salaries, the workers lived in the same conditions as the ancient slaves. The workers were catechised and baptised. They soon refused to work on Sundays and this didn’t please the landowners, who had always been all-powerful.
Access: Father Martin is buried in the mausoleum intended for the ancient parish priests, just behind the town centre’s church.
The Route des Tamarins

Linking Petite-France (route du Maïdo, in the upper parts of Saint-Paul) to the Tévelave, the Route forestière des Tamarins is an original track just as the road linking Bébour-Bélouve to the Plaine des Palmistes is.
Access: follow the road after Le Tévelave’s church.
