The commune of Les Avirons overlooks the ocean but does not lie on the coast.
The town spreads upwards. The higher the altitude, the better the harvest. The Tévelave, a mid-altitude plateau opens onto a vast “forêt des hauts” and the beautiful Routes des Tamarins. Ecotourism has developed in an impressive way. Les Avirons is rapidly growing. Many people who work in the South take up residence there. Les Avirons offers the advantage of having cooler weather than on the coastline without being too high.

As soon as he arrived on the island, Father Martin became the enemy of the bourgeoisie. From the day he took up his post in April 1879, his objective was to convert and teach the Indian immigrants. He soon realised that apart from their salaries, the workers lived in the same conditions as the ancient slaves. The workers were catechised and baptised. They soon refused to work on Sundays and this didn’t please the landowners, who had always been all-powerful.
Linking Petite-France (route du Maïdo, in the upper parts of Saint-Paul) to the Tévelave, the Route forestière des Tamarins is an original track just as the road linking Bébour-Bélouve to the Plaine des Palmistes is.
15 Réunion Island villages belonging to 12 “communes” hold the “Village Créole” label. This label is a sign of authenticity, the sense of welcome and the respect for traditions and heritage.
